How To Set Up WordPress With HostGator
|
Ok so by now you’ve definitely heard of Wordpress…because really, who hasn’t? It’s all the rage on the internet these days, so its about time you get set up with it and join the cool kids right?
Wordpess is by far one of the easiest platforms to set up and use, and coming from a web developer, that should mean something. Too many people just assume it’s too hard and never attempt it, but I’ll prove them wrong!
I’m going to show you step by step how easy it is to set up wordpress on your hostgator account, and from there, you should be all set! Don’t have a hosting account yet? Not a problem! See What You Need To Know Before You Get Started Online for some great info.
Set Up
1)So first things first, log into your HostGator control panel, most likely this is www.yoursite.com/cpanel but either way you should know how to do this.
2 ) Enter your username and password and click “Login” or hit enter.
3 ) Once you are logged in you should be looking at your admin panel. Scroll down to the software/services panel and click “Quick Install”
4 )To your left, there should be a menu, and under the “Blog Software” menu, click “WordPress”.
5 ) A little wordpress dialog should show up on the right side of the screen. Click “Continue”.
6 )For the “Application URL” include where you want wordpress to be installed. If you want to use it as your main site (as in www.yoursite.com) then leave this blank. If you want it to be another URL (as in www.yoursite.com/blog) you would enter the additional url…in this case it would just be “Blog”.
7 ) For the “Admin Email” enter the email that you use the most. Your password will be sent to this address, so be sure to enter it correctly.
8 ) The “Blog Title”, “First Name” and “Last name” fields are pretty self explanatory so enter the appropriate information.
9 ) Click “Install Now”. A green progress bar should show up and let you see the progress of the install.
10 ) Once the wizard tells you that the installation is ready, it will show you some text and ask you to “Click Here” to view your site. Go ahead and click it, it should load your new blog or website!
Configuring a few more things
11 ) You now want to go log in to your email account (the same email you entered in step 7) and look for an email from HostGator that includes your new password. You want to select the password in your email, right click on it, and “Copy” the text.
12 ) Go back to your blog, and in the URL box up top (right now it should be the URL you entered in step 6, EG. wwww.yoursite.com) and add “/wp-admin” to the end of it (it should now read www.yoursite.com/wp-admin) and hit enter.
13 ) You should now be looking at the wordpress default log in screen. Enter the username “admin” and paste the password you copied form your email in the password box. Hit Enter. This should log you in to your site’s back-end where you set stuff up.
14 ) The first thing you probably want to do is change your password to something you can remember… So click on “users”, and then hover over the user “admin” and click on “edit” (it should show up right under the username when you hover over it).
15 ) Scroll down to the “New Password” section near the bottom of the edit profile page. Enter your new password in this box, and then once again to confirm it below. Click “Update Profile”.
That’s it! You are now 100% completely set up with wordpress and ready to start blogging or adding your content!
If you are familiar with wordpress, you can dive right in and start writing! If not, you may want to continue on to the next tutorial “WordPress Basics” to learn a little bit about posting and setting some other things up.
So I’ve done my best to walk you through the set up process for wordpress as quickly and simply as I can, but I realize that some of you are still visual learners, so here is a video that walks you through everything just like what Ive done here, except you actually get to see it.
As always, post any questions in the comments section below!!
